Cement Shipment Decreased Slightly in 2023

Total shipments of portland and blended cement, including imports, in the United States and Puerto Rico in December 2023 were an estimated 7.1 million metric tons (Mt), essentially unchanged from revised shipments in December 2022, according to the most recent USGS Mineral Industry Survey. Of total blended tonnage reported in December, 3.7 Mt (98%) was estimated to be portland-limestone cement (Type IL). 

Shipments in 2023 totaled an estimated 107 Mt, a slight decrease from those in 2022. 

The leading producing states for portland and blended cement in December 2023 were, in descending order, Texas, Missouri, California, Florida and Alabama. The leading cement-consuming states (Texas, Florida, California, Georgia and North Carolina, in descending order) received 42.9% of December shipments.

Masonry cement shipments totaled an estimated 159,000 metric tons in December 2023, a 5.3% decrease from those in December 2022 and a 6.9% decrease from the five-year average in December (2018–22). Shipments in 2023 totaled an estimated 2.3 Mt, a 5.5% decrease from those in 2022. The leading masonry cement-consuming states in December 2023 were, in descending order, Florida, Texas, California, North Carolina, Georgia and Tennessee; these states received 63.8% of December shipments.

Clinker production, excluding Puerto Rico, totaled an estimated 6.6 Mt in December 2023, unchanged from production in December 2022. Production for the year through December totaled an estimated 76.3 Mt, a 3.9% decrease from those in 2022. The leading clinker-producing states in December 2023 were, in descending order, Texas, Missouri, California, Florida and Alabama.
